Every day, a bead

Every day, a bead

Can we use jewellery to get a sense of our habits? Let's find out.

Think of a bead necklace. One bead follows the other, just as days do, and weeks. Some beads may be more spectacular and stand out from the rest, others are all the same. The fact that they are stringed together turns them into one, limited whole.

Time is a strange thing, isn’t it? While strictly measured in minutes, hours, days and weeks, the way we feel about it can be completely different. Some days last forever (like diamonds). Some days, we just want to forget. Others fly by in a neutral stream, without leaving any trace in us (no bling and also no worries).

Time and habits

Changing habits in this stream of time can be hard. How can you keep track? How do you even know where to start? How can you set a goal for yourself that is realistic?

I started playing with this idea. I wanted to be able to colour each day, to visualise a particular habit that I had and that I wanted to change. I needed to get to know my habits, to see them in front of me (I don't know about you, but I think it's pretty easy to fool oneself about these things). And I wanted to do it in a jewellery-ish way. So, I drew myself a necklace with 365 beads. It seemed much more fun to colour a necklace than to note down a number in a table.

So, if you’re looking to keep track of a particular habit – it can be anything really - here are a few “bead calendars” that you can download and print for your own use. Or why not simply take a jewellery-ish moment to colour some beads for the fun of it?

For now, there are bead calendars with 90, 100 and 365 days. You can download them for free here below (pdf format).

Fits well on paper formats A4 and Letter. Numbers in green will not show on the pdf.

Hopefully, this can give you some inspiration, in one way or another. I wish you good luck in whatever you set out to do. May time and jewellery be on your side, always.
